Is Focus Powerful? Six Habits to Help You Focus on Bible Study

Focus is Powerful! Use These Six Habits to Help You in Bible Study

Do you struggle to stay focused? Let’s narrow that question down. Do you struggle to stay focused on reading and studying your bible? Is focus powerful? Yes! It is! Continue reading to know how!

It is not surprising that it is difficult to stay focused in our non-stop, instant-access world.
However, it is more important than ever to focus and discipline ourselves for godliness.

The Bible says a lot about focus. It does not use the word focus but when you read the following verses of scripture and the instruction for our walk with Christ you know in order to carry out the instruction we must intentionally focus.

Bible Verses That Demand Our Focus

Here are five Bible Verses that demand our focus and attention to prosper and live in the light of the Lord.

COLOSSIANS 3:2–Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

PROVERBS 4:25–Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.

MATTHEW 6:33-But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

PSALM 1:1-3-Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

ROMANS 8:5-For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

DO YOU SEE THE FOCUSED ACTIONS IN EACH OF THESE VERSES?

Focus is Powerful for a Deep and Abiding Love

Focus means putting your energy and thoughts into a particular thought, task, or goal for a specified time. In this case, bible reading and study.

It is well worth the time-focused time we intentionally set aside to spend time with God in reading, study, and prayer. The results are never ending and will deepen our relationship with Christ.

Six Habits to Help you Focus on Bible Study

If you desire to grow in your relationship with Christ and find it hard to stay focused try these six habits to see if they help you in your Bible Study time.

PRAY: Bible study and reading do not come naturally. It takes the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us a desire and discipline to be in God’s word. Develop the habit by asking God daily for the desire to read and study your Bible.

CLEAN YOUR SPACE: I cannot concentrate if my desk is messy, so I eliminate the distraction by putting away anything unrelated to Bible Study.

PICK A STUDY: Sometimes, we do not know where to start, so we jump from one thing to the next, trying to land somewhere. Determine to read and study one book at a time. There are a ton of Bible studies out there to choose from. Do your research and find one that is solid and guides you through God’s word with no fluff but one that keeps you focused on the word. I have several to choose from. Learn more about my studies here.

PICK A TIME: Find a time of the day free from as many distractions as possible. For many, first thing in the morning is an optimal time. For others, it might be the end of the day. Try one of these or even the middle of the day. Try the other if you try one that does not work for your schedule. Work at it until you find the best time for you, and stay with it.

REMOVE DISTRACTIONS: Turn off your phone if it distracts you. If you use your phone to read or study, turn off notifications so you are not tempted to scroll social media or read incoming emails. Turn off the television or pick a place to study free from whatever vies for your attention.

THINK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME WITH GOD: The goal for every Christian is, should be, to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. This truth will help you stay focused and give you a focal point. If you do not understand this one thing, and it is vitally important, your eyes and attention will be turned away to the things that will not bring peace, hope, or satisfaction.

Final Thoughts

I hope and pray these six suggested habits help you get started or refocused on the most important thing for your walk with Christ. I would love to hear any habits you have developed that have helped you stay focused on your time in the Bible.
