How and Why We Lay Our Urgency Under the Grace and Will of God

August 20, 2021 · In: Spiritual Growth

A Sense of Urgency

How do I lay my sense of urgency under the Grace and Will of God?

Why do I lay my sense of urgency under the grace and will of God?

If these questions apply to anyone, they most definitely apply to me!

Put me on a poster because I am the queen of the urgent!

If they apply to you, I pray that by the grace of God, He gives you

•Knowledge,

•Understanding,

•And wisdom

to apply His truth in your life so you can enjoy His rest.

I am Getting It

My pastor gave me a small booklet about 14 years ago titled “The Tyranny of the Urgent” By Charles E Hummel. I read the booklet several times.

To be honest, I did not understand the message of the book.

It was only today, through a conversation with a friend, that the grace of God gave me more insight into the sense of urgency I feel about my to-do list and pressing needs. I now understand I can depend on Him and rest in His grace and will.

Important But Not Urgent!

There are things in our lives that fit under the urgent category. It is urgent that you pay your light bill, water bill, house payment.

Suppose someone needs urgent medical attention. Do not wait. Get it done.

However, there are things that, although important, are not necessarily urgent.

I am a stay-at-home Granny, AKA Gaga.

I am also a blogger and writer of Bible Studies. My urgent to-do list looks something like this.

URGENT: GET THESE DONE NOW!

  • Dirty Dishes
  • Clean Floors
  • Washing
  • Blog Post
  • Write a new study

These are only a few things on my list.

My mind is constantly churning out things that need to be done because they’re urgent.

This is where I have to stop and receive God’s grace because I will work myself to death, thinking these things must get done or the world as I know it will come to an end.

Your list may look similar or very different, but the principle of laying down the sense of urgency is the same.

There is nothing wrong with these things, and in my little world, they are important.

How important are they?

Especially if they consume me to the point of panic and or unworthiness.

The things I listed above are important in anybody’s world. They are basic things that do require attention. We must take care of them at some point.

But

•Dirty dishes can wait.

•Clean floors can wait.

•Washing can wait.

We need to prioritize. Sometimes, maybe not even realizing it, our priorities get disordered, and those dishes that could wait, take the time of something more important.

More Important But Not Urgent

What about other more important things, like the salvation of a family member or friend.

What about the country that needs to hear the gospel message, but missionaries are on lockdown because of Covid.

What about the church building that needs building, a piece of property needs purchased to put said church building on?

These things are much more important than dirty dishes. They are real legitimate needs.

But when these things are not being done on our urgent timetable, we fret, worry, and wring our hands.

And we may even question God. Why?

Because we have taken them upon ourselves and not laid them under the grace and will of God.

By the way! The church building, the property, the missionaries who are on lockdown because of Covid, these are the needs of my friend who is a missionary in Bangladesh.

They are real and they are important!

Why We Lay Our Urgency Down

We must lay or urgency under the grace and will of God with the faith that He Who Promised is faithful to His own Will.  It all comes down to faith and rest, In Him.

Do we believe He is capable?

Do we believe He is not bound by time?

Do we believe He will accomplish all He wills?

Do we trust He knows what is best?

Do we believe He is sovereign and in complete control?

Because we live in a day where everything is only a click away, we tend to believe that God works just like Google. Often our desires and real legitimate needs come with a sense of urgency. Faith and trust in God are the foundations on which we lay our urgency.

How We Lay our Urgency Under the Grace and Will of God

Laying down, putting off the old self, and putting on the new self does not come naturally.

It takes discipline and continual waring against the flesh.

It takes trust, belief, and rest to lay down our sense of urgency.

We must build our knowledge and understanding of God through prayer and the reading and studying of His word.

We will never get it anywhere else.

If we apply ourselves to these disciplines, God will, by His grace and in His perfect timing, teach us how to lay our sense of urgency under His grace and will.

He is working! If it takes our lifetime, so be it.
