God’s Grace Abounded All The More! Romans Bible Study

I am sure you have seen them, you know the memories that Facebook pulls up on your feed of events that you posted a year or more ago. This post, “God’s Grace abounded All the More” which I wrote a year ago today, popped up on my feed. Normally I will scroll right past them. But today I did not. I wanted to read what I had written on this same day last year. This post blessed me this morning. Mind you, it was not my writing that blessed me so, but the grace and mercy of our Great God!  I hope it blesses you too!

Under The Wrath of God!

Someone said that Romans 5:12-21 is the most difficult passage in Scripture to interpret and understand. I will say that whoever made that statement was not far off the mark. I have read this passage over and over again. I am still pulling out hidden treasures of truth. I am sure there is much more to discover. But before Paul gets to the fifth chapter of Romans he begins to teach the truth, that all men are under the wrath of God.

  Romans 1:18 teaches, ” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”

 Why Are All Men Under the Wrath of God?

Romans 1:19 teaches, ” Because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.”Romans 1:21-22, ” For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations; and their foolish heart  was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.”

As he moves through the following chapters he builds on this truth giving us more and more insight into the depravity and corruption that we are in. We come to understand that there is nothing we can do to free ourselves from the wrath and judgment of God. No amount of works will save us. There is absolutely nothing that we can do, to earn our salvation. We are dead in our trespasses and sins.

Romans 3:19-20 teaches, ” Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.”

Paul begins to builds on this truth to show us the Love and Grace of God. Even though we are sinners deserving His wrath and punishment, God, by His Love and compassion, has provided a way of salvation. God’s grace abounded!

Romans 3:21-22 teaches, ” But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ.”

He moves us into chapter 5 still building on the truth of man’s need for salvation and expounding more and more on the Love and Grace of God.

Romans 5:6 teaches, ” For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” Romans 5:10, For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more having been reconciled we shall be saved by His life.”

We now find ourselves in verses 12-21 of Romans 5. In this passage, Paul takes us all the way back to the fall to explain how sin entered into the world.

Romans 5:12 teaches, ” Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.”

God’s Grace Abounded All The More

Even though there are many truths in this section of Scripture, (and again some truths that are hard to grasp), the over-arching theme that I see is the Abounding Grace of God-given through His Son Jesus Christ.

Today’s study has landed me in Romans 5:20-21. If you will permit me to say this, I believe Paul sums up all he has been teaching in the previous chapters in these last two verses of Romans 5.

Romans 5:20-21 teaches, ” The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

This section of Scripture is not teaching that the Law causes us to sin. On the contrary, it reveals to us that we are sinners under the wrath of God and in need of a Savior. We can look around us and see the abundant sin that is in the world today.

BUT;

God’s Grace is greater, greater than all our sins.
