The Day of the Lord: An Appeal and a Warning to Repent.
This post goes along with our study Reading Twelve Old Testament Books. You can purchase the workbook here: Study Guide for Reading Twelve Old Testament Books.
Warning! The subject matter in the book of Joel is far from warm and fluffy! Tickling ears desire only to hear about the love, grace, kindness, and mercy of God. I am always ready to hear about God’s love and grace but before we can truly understand its magnitude we must understand that God is more than just love. He is also wrathful, and just. Joel 1:15 teaches,
Alas the day of the LORD is near and will come as destruction from Almighty.
Blow A Trumpet in Zion
Blow a trumpet in Zion, and sound the alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord, is coming; surely it is near.
Joel writes this book in the midst of a terrible plague in Judah. God is using locust to completely devastate the land. Joel 1:4. The locust invasion is a warning from God to awaken His people of the final judgment, “The Day of the Lord.” Read God’s words of warning and words of grace to the people of Israel and to the people of our day:
- HEAR THIS
- LISTEN
- AWAKE
There is a day of judgment that is coming, it is closer than we think, and it is final. After this day there will be no more days of warning.
Repent For the Day is Near
- CONSECRATE A FAST
- PROCLAIM A SOLEMN ASSEMBLY
- GATHER THE ELDERS AND ALL THE PEOPLE
Cry out to God while there is still time!
To You, O LORD, I cry; for fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness and the flame has burned up all the trees of the field. Even the beast of the field pant for You; for the water brooks are dried up and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
The generations before us warned of the impending day of the Lord. Our generation must warn the next. For the time is closer than we think. We must go into all nations and teach the good news of Jesus Christ. He is our only Hope!

This type of teaching about warnings, judgment, and repentance is missing in many churches. We need to wake up and realize that many Christian teachers today teach to itching ears. It appears that much of the Bible is not being exposed or taught anymore in our day to the peril of believers.

Yes, Lindam, the churches need to wake up! Paul does tell us that in the last day’s people will only want their ears tickled! We need to be cancelling that teaching with the truth of God’s Word!
