The Bible Tells Us the Chief End of Man?
The book of Romans is one of the most comprehensive books on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For the next several chapters Paul is going to lay out in great detail how depraved people are, and the wrath of God that rests on them.
But tucked very boldly in-between his explanation of mans standing before God he will bring in God’s grace that comes through His Son Jesus Christ. We will also look at and answer what is the chief end of man?
When we go into our homes and into the world with the gospel we must go with a balanced presentation of its content. We cannot on one hand only present the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and on the other hand present the wrath of God that rests on a depraved human race.
The scriptures teach Both of these truths. In our presentation of the Gospel we must teach both. One without the other is a false Gospel!
I am afraid that we live in a day where sin is being swept under the rug and grace is being mis-used. Believe me when I say that I am all for grace, because I am in great need of it.
But you and I, and all the world, need to know what grace is and why we need it. When we come to an understanding of who we are and what God has done for His beloved through Jesus Christ we have a greater understanding of how AMAZING GRACE really is!
Our journey on the Roman road will continue by asking one question,
What is the chief end of man?
Here are ten Scriptures that teach this truth.
- “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” {1 Corinthians 10:31}
- “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” {Revelation 4:11}
- “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. {Romans 11:36}
- ” Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Christ Jesus, to whom belongs the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” {1 Peter 4:11}
- “Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come before Him; worship the LORD in holy array.”{1 Chronicles 16:29}
- “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”{Deuteronomy 6:5}
- “Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.” {Psalm 73:25}
- “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” {Psalm 73:26}
- “Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I will say rejoice.” {Philippians 4:4}
- ” Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; for the LORD God is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.” {Isaiah 12:2}
When the World Gives Us More Joy Than God Himself
We can look around and know from how the world looks, and what the Scriptures teach, man does not glorify God nor do they enjoy Him. If we are honest Beloved, there are many more things in this world that give us joy and pleasure and not God Himself.
Man is in need of a Savior! We know why man needs a Savior, “He does not glorify God nor enjoy Him.” Let’s dig into the book of Romans a little deeper and answer these questions:
- Who provides salvation?
- What was required for salvation?
- How is salvation received?
I would like to challenge all of us to sit with our Bibles open and look for scripture verses that command us to Glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
Start a notebook. Every time you sit to read or study write down the verses that you see that teach this truth.
I would love to hear the verses that you found. Please share them here with us. Let’s Glorify God and enjoy Him forever!
The question, “What is the chief end of man.” was taken from The Westminster Shorter Catechisms. A Catechism is a teaching. These Catechisms were developed to teach the members of the church the doctrines of the Bible. There are 107 of these teachings, all with Scripture references. Click on the link below for a complete list of the questions.

Hi there Lisa, I appreciated your visit to my blog recently, and I’m glad I stopped by here today. Blessings on your new study series! I LOVE the book of Romans. And reading this is confirmation to me today because I’ve written a post on glorifying God to publish tomorrow! (I’ve had a hard time writing it, but now reading your title and your graphic, I feel God speaking.) I almost used that Westminster catechism statement too!

Lisa, this is such an important post and a topic which has been heavy on my heart lately. You are right: We can’t present only the grace or only the wrath. There has to be a perfect balance. Thank you for shedding light on this topic.
Lisa says
Abby,it hurts my heart when the whole truth is not taught. People need the truth the whole truth, spoken with much grace and love. I am glad you stopped by today. Thank you for your encouragement!

Amen! I heard (or read? I don’t remember now…) that grace apart from an understanding of sin and human corruption is cheap grace. Why would Christ die for something that didn’t desperately need to be fixed?
Lisa says
Yes, Ally! Why would He die if there was nothing to fix! We are all broken and in great need of fixing. Thanks for stopping by!

Last week at my church we were discussing the purpose we had and I confidently stated… It is to glorify God. My pastor stated that I was ahead of myself a bit. And then said we should love God according to Jesus Himself. As a result of that comment I said… Well you cannot glorify God without love so…
I think we’re both seeing and thinking alike. Doesn’t glorifying God and loving Him link together?
Lisa Morris says
Hi Jennifer!
I do think that glorifying God and loving God through Christ is linked together. We cannot love God unless He first loves us, through Christ. Thank you for our question. I hope I have helped in some way! Blessings!

This is a wonderful blog. I am glad i stopped here today.
One of the verses i found is Colossians 1:10 that clearly tells us were created for Christ. I do not know anything more beautiful than that realization.
