The book of James is often called the “Proverbs of the New Testament” because it is full of practical wisdom and straight to the point instruction on how to live out our faith. The book of James is believed to have been written by James, the half-brother of Jesus. This letter is packed with truth that challenges and encourages all believers to move past empty words into genuine, active faith. Discover three powerful truths from the book of James we need to know to help us walk in Genuine faith.
James Teaches That Faith Must Be Lived Out
One of the main themes of James is that our faith is not merely something we believe—it’s something we do. James 2:17 reminds us, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” Do not misunderstand. James is not teaching that we are saved by works but that true faith always produces good works. Paul and James agree on this. Paul says in Ephesians 2:10, “We are His workmanship created in christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
Why does this matter? Our actions, our works, taking care of the poor, controlling our speech, and persevering under trials, shows the reality of Christ in us. Learn more about doing the word or applying the word in my article, “Faith Without Obedience.”
Trials Are the Path to Spiritual Maturity
James opens his letter with a surprising, almost hard to believe command: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials.“(James 1:2). James teaches that God uses trials and sufferings to strengthen our faith and produce endurance.
When we understand that trials have a purpose it transforms how we respond to them. Instead of discouragement, we can choose joy, knowing God is shaping us through the process He designed to sanctify and draw us closer to Him.
Godly Wisdom Is Essential for Everyday Living
It is very clear James is encouraging us to seek God’s wisdom. James 1:5 teaches, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Notice, when we ask, God gives without reproach. What this means is God does not disapprove nor is He disappointed when we ask. What encouragement and freedom for our souls.
True wisdom comes from God, not the world. Read more about this truth in 1 Corinthians 1:1-31. God’s wisdom leads to peace, humility and righteousness. James 3:17.
We are easily swayed by our emotions, personnel desires, and the world around us. But, with God’s wisdom we can walk through this life with discernment and God’s abundant grace.
