The Bible: It is more than just a book.
Before we look at the five attributes of the Bible and why they matter, let’s look at what the Bible is.
It Is the Word of God!
Every word, every paragraph, every chapter and book are important. The Bible is 66 individual books divided into the Old and New Testaments or covenants. Written by 40 men inspired through the very breath of God. 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
Peter writes this to the church, “ But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. 2 Peter 1:20-21.
What is the Purpose of the Bible?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 not only teaches that the words we have recorded were breathed out by God, these words are what teach doctrine, reprove, correct, and train in righteousness. They also equip the men and women of God for every good deed.
The main person of the Bible is Christ and salvation is the main theme. Reading, studying, and applying God’s Word to our lives keeps us from sin. Psalm 119:8 The Scriptures teach us the character and attributes of God and the role of the Holy Spirit in the believers life.
The Bible gives spiritual guidance. Proverbs 2:6 teaches, “For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding”
Can We Trust It?
In a Word, YES! It is by faith we believe the Word of God is our guidance and direction while we are on this earth. Our lack of faith in God is what will keep us from trusting in and living according to His Word.
So , here are five attributes of the Bible which the Bible says about itself. These attributes we need to keep in mind as we read and study God’s Word.
God’s Word is Infallible:
It is without mistakes. The bible is without any errors and is perfect because it is just that, God’s Word. Psalm 19:7 says of itself, “The Law of the LORD is perfect.” It goes without saying that if God is perfect then His word, Our Bible, is excellent.
God’s Word is Inerrant.
Inerrant means the Bible is incapable of being wrong. Every word of God is pure and true.
Psalm 12:6, “ The words of the LORD are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.”
God’s Word is complete.
Many believe that God still gives revelation today. They do not believe that the 66 books we have are complete. However, the book of Revelation ends with a testimony of its completeness and warning.
Revelation 22:18-19, “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book: and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of prophecy, God will take away his part in the tree of life from the holy city, which are written in this book.”
God’s Word is Our Final Authority
“The LORD has spoken.” Isaiah 1:2. You and I can ask questions of the Bible. We can discuss the meanings of the Bible. But we must never question the Bible nor discuss whether or not it is true.
God’s Word is Sufficient
God’s word is enough, and it is adequate. Peter teaches that God has given us everything we need for life and for godliness. 2 Peter 1:3. The word of God is sufficient for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the words of Christ. 2 Timothy 3:15, Romans 10:17. The Word of God is sufficient for growing in maturity. God’s word is alive and active and able (Hebrews 4:12) it is profitable for reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.
