How to be a Woman Shaped by Good Theology

Women need to be shaped by good sound theology. Contrary to what some may believe and express, the study of theology is vital for every child of God.

Are You a Woman Shaped By Good Theology?

The study of theology is not just for men, pastors, elders, or deacons. It is for every woman making a claim to Christianity. It is for the younger woman, the older woman, the single woman, the married woman, or wherever my sweet sister you may fall. Women who study good theology, found in the word of God, are shaped by good theology and equipped to walk in godliness in all areas of their lives.

What is Theology Anyway?

The word theology comes from the Greek words theos (God) and logia (Word). Theology is the study of the nature of God and religious belief. For the Christian,  it is the study of divine revelation found in the Bible. As John MacArthur puts it, ” It has God as its perpetual centerpiece, God’s Word as its source, and godliness as its aim.” As Christian women, our goal and desire should be to know God through His word and be shaped by good sound theology.

She Knows She Needs to Shaped by Good Theology

I am a mother, wife, sister, aunt, friend, member of a local church, and a new grandmother. In every one of these roles, I must study and learn good theology to guide my heart and my mind. On any given day I am challenged to use the theology I have learned and pull out of my heart God’s word so that I will walk uprightly in every situation in which I find myself. We are commanded to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, our souls, and our mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.  (Matthew 22:37-39) Good theology teaches us to love God with all that we are and to show that love to others.

She Needs Good Theology to Navigate the Hard

If you have been a Christian for any length of time, you already know that suffering is the call of every believer. (1 Peter 2:21) We have not been promised, “our best life now!” That is coming! Our hearts are desperately wicked, (Jeremiah 17:9) and from it flows the well spring of life. (Proverbs 4:23.) Life gets messy, in the home, in the church, and out in the world. Because of the messy, and sin, we must watch over our heart with all diligence. What we put in, or do not put in, has a dramatic effect on our lives and those around us. Without the proper knowledge of God’s word, the learning and digesting of sound theology, we will become discouraged, and ill-equipped to walk through our suffering. But because we study theology, we can rest in the love of God and enjoy Him above all else.

She Knows God’s Word is the Best Source of Good Theology

There are tons of well written, in-depth books that teach us about the word of God. I am very thankful for the knowledge and wisdom of these men and women. However, these books, no matter how well researched and ordered, cannot replace the Bible. You and I must, primarily, be students of God’s Word. There is no substitute for it. It is not for the lazy, but for those who desire to grow in the wisdom and instruction of the Lord. If a believer does not have the desire to study God’s Word, there is something wrong and lacking in his or her heart. Hit the knees if this applies to you and ask God to give you a desire to know Him through His word and give you the wisdom and knowledge you need to learn and desire good theology.

She Needs Good Theology to Aim Her to Godliness

As a woman of God, the glory of God and godliness is our aim. We must learn good theology to guide us down the path of righteousness. The Bible tells us that a man’s mind plans his ways, but God directs his steps. (Proverbs 16:9) If I do not study the word of God and just go my own way I will soon be walking the broad path of destruction. But, if I consider God’s word and learn what He requires, His word will guide me down the path of righteousness. God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Good sound theology keeps us guarded and confident as we walk in this world.

How about you? You study the Bible to show yourself approved? Do you understand the need for every Christian woman to be shaped by good theology? I would love to hear from you!
