I get asked this question a lot, “Can a Believer lose his or her salvation?” One way I hope to help answer this question is by rewording it. I hope by doing so, it will cause the asker to stop and think about what they are thinking and asking. Instead of “Can a Believer lose their salvation?” I believe a better way to ask this question would be, “Is My Salvation Secure in Christ?
My salvation, your salvation, is entirely secure in Christ. No! A believer, a true Christian, cannot lose their salvation. Yes! The believer’s salvation is secure in Christ! But I cannot just say yes and no, then walk away. Every time someone asks in my salvation secure in Christ, I am sent back to the Bible in search of the Scriptures that give the believer peace and hope.
Salvation Rests in Christ Not in Ourselves
The emphasis of this question, knowingly or unknowingly, is on me, me, and I, the trinity of self. Somehow we think it is up to us to keep ourselves. We unwittingly, foolishly, place security in ourselves instead of the One who is our security. It is true; salvation is ours. But only because it’s a gift. A gift attached with a Promise of security and assurance!
Security Rests in the Power of the Triune God!
So often, our mindset is turned inward instead of where it should be upward. God gives His children faith. You and I must put our God-given faith into practice. Hope rests in and on the work of God through His Son Jesus Christ. It does not put any confidence in the flesh. The security of our salvation rests solely on the power of the Triune God. To help us answer the question, “Is My Salvation Secure in Christ, ” we will look at the Trinity.
Believing God to be Who He Says He is
Do you believe God is who He says He is? Do you think God will do what He says He will do? If you and I have just a mustard seed of faith, we will believe that God is all He says He is, as revealed in the Scriptures. (This is key, we learn who God says He is through His word the Bible.) If we believe Him to be true, we must trust He has our salvation secure. Before the foundation of the world, God set His unchanging saving love on His elect. Those whom He foreknew would be granted saving grace in His Son Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:29-30)
It is impossible for those whom the Father predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son to fail. He who began the good work in His children will carry it on to completion. (Philippians 1:6) Paul was confident in this, and you and I can be as well. For we know God causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
God’s will is that none will be lost that He has given to His Son Jesus Christ!
All that the Father gives me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven , not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:37-40
There is Nothing Big Enough to Overturn His Will
There is no one big enough or powerful enough to overturn the will of God the Father. God is the great I AM. There is none like Him. His purposes will be established, and He accomplishes His good pleasure. Isaiah 46:8-10. It was the Father’s good pleasure to give the elect to His Son. His plan of salvation will be accomplished.
When anyone comes to Christ, believes in Christ, and beholds the Son, it is because of God’s sovereign grace. You can rest assured your salvation is secure because of the preserving power of God the Father.
Our Security Rests In the Accepted Work of Christ
God is not only a God of love He is also a God of justice. When He says He cannot let the guilty go unpunished, He is true to His word. For anyone to be saved sin had to be punished. The writer of Hebrews tells us, “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin.”(Hebrews 9:22) God’s wrath and justice were satisfied in Christ’s substitutionary work on the cross. Christ stood in the place of elect sinners and bore their punishment for sin. (1 Peter 2:24) ( 2 Corinthians 5:21) The death He died, He died to sin, once for all. It is complete. Sin and death were buried. Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father(Romans 6:4) never to die again, death no longer is master over Him. (Romans 6:9-10)
The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is proof of God’s satisfaction of His Son’s completed work on the cross. (1 Timothy 3:16)
Christ is Alive
The writer of Hebrews tells us that Christ holds His priesthood forever because He is alive forever. (Hebrews 7:23-25) Christ is alive and seated at the right hand of the Father, daily making intercession for those who are His.
Christ is alive, and the believer is raised up with Him to newness of life. (Romans 6:4) Since we are united with Him in the likeness of His death, CERTAINLY, we will also be in the likeness of His resurrection. (Romans 6:5) Hope for the true believer is the certainty of God’s satisfaction in the worthiness of Christ!
Sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of Promise
Those who hear the message of truth and believe, God pledges by Himself, to keep them and to bring them to their promised inheritance. (Ephesians 1:11-14) He gives the indwelling Holy Spirit as a pledge. As Wayne Grudem Says:
All who have the Holy Spirit within them, all who are truly born again, have God’s unchanging promise and guarentee that the inheritance of eternal life in heaven will certainly be theirs. God’s own faithfullness is pledged to bring it about.”
Persevere in the Faith
Genuine faith results in obedience. God’s sovereignty does not eliminate our responsibility to persevere. Those who abide in the Word(Jesus) are true disciples. (John 8:31) The opposite is also true. Those who hear God’s words are His, but those who do not hear or understand do not belong to Him. (John 8:47)
Peter exhorts all believers to be diligent in making sure God’s calling and election. (2 Peter 1:10) God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness so that by them, we may become partakers of His divine nature. ( 2 Peter 1:3) Immediately after making this statement, he urges us to apply all diligence in our faith! ( 2 Peter 1:5)
Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Not by works of righteousness but through the fruit of obedience to the word of God!
I hope these truths have helped you if you struggle with believing your salvation is secure! Please leave me a note and let me know how great God is! If you have a question, please let me know!
