The Christian Walk is a Narrow Focused Walk

September 14, 2018 · In: Study the Bible

Our Christian walk is not Christ plus something else. Our Christian walk is not an, I got this, kind of walk. It is not “self-help,” but an earnest cry for a help me God walk!  It is Christ above all else. Colossians teaches that Christ is our life! (Colossians 3:4)

Everything we do, say, reach for, and desire should be set on things above (Colossians 3:2) where moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves do not break in to steal. (Matthew 7:19) All of our secure treasures are safely hidden in Christ Jesus. (Colossians 2:3)

Narrow Your Focus

A Christian is a follower of Christ who sets their eyes on Him and walks where He walks. This walk is on a straight and narrow path. Jesus tells His disciples there is a way to enter, and it’s by the narrow gate. There is a gate that is wide and a way that’s broad, and there are MANY who enter it!

Sometimes we can think if something is big, if it is popular, it is good, then it must be the right way to go. Not so! We need to narrow our focus! The wide gate and the broad path leads to destruction. The narrow path and small gate lead to life, and there are few who find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)

Open Your Eyes

Look around! Watch the news, get on social media, and it will not take long for the discerning eye to see, the so-called American “Church” is on a wide path. However, God does have a remnant, an elect group of people, that have not bowed their knees to false doctrine.

The church of Colossae was one such church. Paul describes them as a faithful congregation. (Colossians 1:2) A collective group of people who stood steadfast and firm in their faith. (Colossians 2:7) They were secure in Christ, firm, stable, and unchanging. (Colossians 2:5)

Stay Focused and Dependent

The church is made up of individual faithful believers who remain steadfast in their own personal faith in Christ. When each believer stays focused and dependent on Jesus Christ, their head,( Colossians 2:10)the church collectively will be healthy and built up in Him.

Paul struggles in prayer and word to encourage, strengthen, and remind the church of who they are in Christ. His motive, to narrow their focus. Paul’s focus is an eternal focus. He disciples to present every believer complete, mature in Christ. (Colossians 1:28) One day, when Christ is revealed, those who are in Christ will be revealed with Him. (Colossians 3:4) What a glorious thought!

Keep Seeking the Things above and Walk in Him

Warning! There are wolves among the sheep. (Colossians 2:8, 2:16-23) Over and over Paul reminds the believer to keep seeking the things that are above. (Colossians 3:1) Remember all mysteries and treasures are in Christ who is seated at the right hand of the Father. Keep seeking those things above through prayer and the study of God’s Word.

For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3
