Beloved: Rest in the Mercy of God While He Executes Judgment

June 26, 2017 · In: Study the Bible

I love Old Hymns! How about you? I love some of our more contemporary songs as well but there is something about the heart behind these Old Hymns. One of my favorites is,  “It is Well with My Soul.” The very last stanza has my heart pounding and shouting praise to God because one day our faith will be made sight. You and I beloved will be standing face to face with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Will you Sing this stanza with me?

And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

Beloved, we live in a world that is not our home. Evil abounds and it seems as if God has forgotten about His beloved! We can be assured that He has not. My soul aches for the day when I will be at home in the presence of our God and Savior Jesus Christ! But in the meantime, Beloved, Rest in the Mercy of God While He Executes Judgment!

God Executes Judgment on Nineveh

The book of Nahum is a sequel to the book of Jonah. God sent Jonah to Nineveh, the capital city of Assyria with the message to repent or be destroyed. Nineveh repented and God did not destroy the city. However 100 years later the nation returned to its evil adulteress ways. Nineveh now lived in their own strength and power serving gods made with their own hands and bullying the nations around them. They thought they were safe! However, they would soon find out that God had set His face against them. Nahum 1:1-3

The apostle Paul warns about over-confidence in 1 Corinthians 10:12.|Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.| Proverbs 16: 18 teaches this |Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.|

Nineveh’s over-confidence led to their destruction in 612 B.C. God is a God who does exactly what He says He will do. His prophecy through the mouth of Nahum did in fact take place.

All the while Israel set right in the middle of God’s judgment.

Rest in God’s Mercy While He Executes Judgment

| The LORD is good, and a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him.| Nahum 1:7

Nineveh is at the height of power, destroying all the nations around them including Israel. What is a nation to do? What are you and I to do today when threats from the Muslims, Satan, and the world come up against us Christians? What are we to do when God brings His hand of judgment against His enemies? Rest in God’s mercy, beloved. God is not asleep.  God knows those who take refuge in Him.

We can rest in the mercy and protection of the Lord of promise while living here in this world.

|Behold, on the mountain the feet of him who brings good news, who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; pay your vows. For never again will the wicked one pass through you; he is cut off forever.| Nahum 1:15
