Do You Know if You Are Growing in True Faith?

February 24, 2017 · In: Spiritual Growth

Do you know if you are growing in true faith? There is a way that seems right but its end is destruction.

I am not a wife who bashes her husband nor would I purposely make fun of him. However, he and most men I know do not like to use a map! Can any of you relate? Having said that my husband has a great sense of direction much better than me! He’s built with some kind of inner device that gives him the ability to get where he wants to go. Me, on the other hand, am directionally challenged! I am thankful for GPS because I would use a map but I am not good at reading one! Use whatever is at hand right? There have been occasions that my husband did not use a map nor stop and ask directions and we ended up, well, lost! We found our way back but boy it would have been easier to follow the directions in the first place.

You and I must use the word of God as our map to ensure we are growing in true faith.

God Has Given To Us EVERYTHING We Need

2 Peter 2:3 teaches, ” God’s divine power has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His glory and excellence.” What a gracious and loving God. He gives us salvation, faith, grace to believe, and supplies everything we need to live it out! Does not get any better than that! Why are we so foolish to walk out on our own, no compass, no map, nothing, like we got this? Just like a map will take you to your desired destination without any detours, God and His word are our security that we are on the right path. I know sometimes in life we have detours but they are for our safety and security. God has that covered too!

God Gives Us A Helper

In John 14:25, Jesus tells His disciples that when He leaves the Father would send a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to teach them all things, and to bring to their remembrance all that He taught them. Sisters, we the beloved, have the Helper, the Holy Spirit of God to guide us into all truth. The following Scriptures teach this great truth!

John 14:16: ” I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever.”

Romans 5:5: And hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

Ephesians 1:13-14: “in Him, you also after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.”

2 Timothy 2:14:”Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.”

There are many more verses that teach this truth! I would like to encourage you to search the scriptures to find more on the Holy Spirit our helper and our guide!

Are you following your own thoughts and feelings or are you guarding and listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit?

Do you know if you are growing in true faith? There is a way that seems right but its end is destruction.

God Preserves His Word

First, we are given the Holy Spirit of God to guide and direct us. God also gives us His Word, The Bible, as our road map. By this, we know if we are on the right path. God’s word is infallible and sufficient for life and godliness! Why do we not read and study the word of God? We will read books, blog posts, and listen to almost anything while neglecting the very words of God. His word is alive and active! Hebrews 4:12-13. The Scriptures are God-breathed. They teach, train, rebuke, encourage and correct so that we, the believer, are adequate and equipped for every good work.  2 Timothy 2:16-17. God’s word never changes. He preserves it from generation to generation.

Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105

Are you in the word of God on a regular basis learning who God is and how you are to walk in a manner worthy of your calling? If you are not how do you know if you are growing in true faith?

God Gives the Gift of Prayer

The veil is torn! The work of Christ on the cross has torn the veil that kept us separated from God! We can now approach the throne of grace with confidence! Hebrews 4:16. 1 John 5:14-15, teaches that if we ask anything according to the will of God, He hears and answers our prayers. Our sanctification is the will of God. 1 Thessalonians 4:3. We can approach God in prayer and ask Him te reveal to us any evil way or sin that is entangling us. Ask Him to supply the grace and power to overcome it.

“But in all things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.” Romans 8:37

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:4-5

Are you using the gift of prayer? Are you walking in your own strength or the strength that only God supplies to overcome? If you are not praying and asking God to reveal sin in your life how do you know you are growing in true faith?

God Promises

We started this discussing the fact that God gives us everything we need for life and godliness. All of this rests on His unfailing promises. He grants to us everything, He holds onto us by His glory and excellence. He is true and faithful even when we are not!

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent; has He not said, will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

God can be trusted to complete everything He started! Do you believe Him? I hope and pray that each of us is seeking His face, through prayer and the encouragement of the Scriptures. For, God instructs us to ensure His calling and choosing us! Are these qualities yours and are they increasing?

  • Faith
  • moral excellence
  • knowledge
  • self-control
  • perseverance
  • godliness
  • brotherly kindness
  • love

If these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:8.
