What is reigning in your life? Is it sin or is it Christ? Do we honor God and Christ above all our lusts? Paul has spent the first half of Romans 6 teaching what Christ has done on the cross and how that affects the believer. Since we know what the work of Christ has accomplished we have no excuses to still live in sin. Sin is dethroned and Christ reigns.
Why would we want to?
The Spirit of God is saying, “Do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies so that you obey its lusts.” Our command in this section of Scripture is to present the members of our bodies to God as instruments of righteousness.
Sin is Dethroned!
“Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies so that you obey its lusts.” Romans 6:12
What came before Romans 6:12? Romans 6:1-11, which reminds, reinforces what God through Christ accomplished. It tells us we died to the power of sin and are united with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrected to new life.
Therefore, Put Off the Old and Put on the New
Therefore do not let sin reign. When something reigns, it is KING; it has complete authority or rulership. In the unregenerate or unsaved state, sin, “the King,” told us
- what to do
- when to do it,
- and how to do it.
We were obedient to its guiding. Because we are still in this human body, sin is still present in us. It will always try to tell us
- what to do,
- how to do it
- and when to do it.
It fights to have control. BUT, the Bible says that we WERE slaves to sin. {Romans 6:20} Sin is dethroned; it no longer has the power it once did. We are freed from its control and do not have to obey it anymore. We should not follow it anymore! The King of sin and unrighteousness are replaced with Jesus Christ, the King of Righteousness. He is now the ruler of our souls. Jesus now leads and guides us. He tells us what to do when to do it and how to do it. He does it for our good and His glory.
Sin is Deceitful
Sin is deceitful. Hebrews 3:13. It harms and takes us into places we never want to be.
God says to Cain in Genesis 4:7 that sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you must learn to master it. The reference is to Cains’ anger. We know that it is ok to be angry, but Jesus says, “Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.” {Ephesians 4:26-27.} Cain was angry because God accepted Abel’s sacrifice but did not accept his. Because Cain lets sin control him, he killed his brother. He gave satan the opportunity to deceive him.
We now know that sin is no longer the King of our lives. Paul says, “Do not go on presenting the members of your bodies to sin as instruments of unrighteousness.”
The members of our bodies are:
- The hands
- The feet
- The eyes
- The ears
- The mouth
- The Mind
Galatians 5:19-21 gives us quite a list of the deeds of the flesh:
“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, out bursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have for warned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
DO NOT GO ON DOING THIS BUT:
Present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Sin is no longer your master; God is. Look at the example we have of Christ.
For the death He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life He lives, He lives to God.
