I Love To hear good News! How About You? Romans Bible Study

September 11, 2015 · In: Study the Bible

Don’t you just love good news? I know I do!

Here are some examples of good news that came to my mind:

  • You receive a phone call from an old friend that you have not seen in years, and they want to get together for old times sake.
  • You received the news that for the first time, or maybe even the 10th time, you’re going to be a mom.
  • Your son or daughter announces that you are going to be a grandmother! (I am waiting on that one with great expectation)
  • You have been praying and God answers your prayer with a resounding, unequivocal yes.

The opposite of good news is bad news. None of us want to receive or even hear bad news,

  • such as the cancer test came back positive,
  • you lost your job,
  • or someone really close to you has passed away.

The book of Romans is an announcement of God’s Good News. Along with this news He also announces some bad news. This bad news is worse than any we could ever receive. But it is necessary that we hear it in order to understand the Good News that He is sending!

If we are speaking the Good News of Jesus Christ without letting people know the bad news, or the condition that they are in before a Holy Righteous God, we have warped the truth. The good and the bad both encompass the gospel message. We do a disservice to our neighbor if the whole truth is not taught.

We will concentrate more on mans problem (the bad news) as we work through Romans. For today let’s get an overview of what the Scriptures teach about mans problem. To begin we will first look at the character of God.

The Character of God:

God is Holy;

Habakkuk 1:13 teaches, “Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, and You cannot look on wickedness with favor.”

Isaiah 59:2 teaches, “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and Your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.”

Because of God’s Holiness He cannot look on man’s wickedness with favor. He cannot approve the evil of mankind.

God is Just:

Psalm 7:11-12 teaches, “God is a Righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day. If a man does not repent He will sharpen His sword; He has bent His bow and made it ready.”

Romans 1:18-23 teaches, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”

Because God is Just and cannot go against His own nature, He must punish sin.

The Bad News: Man is Corrupt

Romans 3: 10-12 teaches, “There is none righteous, not even one, There is none who understands, There is none who seek for God: All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good. There is not even one.”

Ephesians 2:1-3 teaches, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”

Titus 3:3 teaches, “For we once were also foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.”

Man is Under God’s Wrath and Curse!

Galatians 3: 10 teaches, “For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law to perform them.”

James 2:10 teaches, “For whoever keeps the whole Law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”

Ephesians 5:6 teaches, “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.”

The things spoken of in Ephesians 5:6 have been recorded in Ephesians 5:3-5: Immorality, impurity, greed, filthiness, silly talk, coarse jesting, covetousness, and idolatry. Those who practice such things do not have an inheritance in the kingdom of God.

There is not one person that has not received this bad news! “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23.

The Good News!

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high. Hebrews 1:1-3

  •  The Gospel or the Good News is the communication of God to man.
  • Jesus is the revelation of God’s love and sacrifice that saves us from God’s righteous judgment.
  • Through Christ God has provided the way for man to be freed from the penalty of sin and death.

12 Promises of God that are realized in Christ Jesus: That’s Good News

  12. God’s divine power  has been granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His glory and excellence. {2 Peter 1:3}

I told you I love to hear good News! This good news compares to none other. It is the best news that could ever be announced!

God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:9

He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

In the midst of a very humanistic culture that lauds the inherent goodness of people at every turn, the idea of the fallen nature of mankind is a foreign one to so many. That’s why messages like this one are critically important. Thank you for being faithful to look to the Scriptures, and for being unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, sharing boldly both the good news and the bad. I’m glad you linked up with us at Grace & Truth!
