” But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for their is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; ” Romans 3:21-24
In Mondays post we learned that the word “BUT” as used in the context of these verses is a “GRACE” word. Today we will revisit these verses and learn through what it means that, God gifted His grace!
God’s Free Gift of Grace:
Romans 3:24 says that those who have believed through faith in Jesus Christ, God has justified and redeemed. Justification and redemption are God’s free gift of Grace! ย We cannot earn them by our works or our goodness. Those who ย believe by faith in Jesus Christ receive this amazing gift of Grace!ย
The Free Gift of Justification:
God’s free gift of justification comes through the redemption which is in Jesus Christ. We will look at redemption in a moment but first let’s get an understanding of justification. We will start by looking at the definition: this definition is taken from the Westminster Shorter Catechism question 33.
Justification: Justification is an act of God’s free grace, wherein He pardoneth all our sins, and accepts us as righteous in His sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone.
We learn that justification is an act of God’s free grace. For those who by faith alone, that believe in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation, God Himself justifies. He pardons, forgives all our sin, only on the basis of the work of His Son on the cross! Because of the work of Jesus Christ and God’s satisfaction in His work, God accepts us as righteous! Remember what Romans 3:10 said, “There is none righteous, not even one.” This is amazing, we are not righteous but because of the work of Christ, and by placing our faith in His work alone, God looks at us as righteous! In God’s eyes we are righteous.
Christ’s righteousness has been imputed to us. What does that mean?
Imputed means: to ascribe, regard, attribute, to someone by virtue of a quality that is in another. That quality of righteousness that only Christ possess is laid on us! We have been clothed in the righteousness of Christ Jesus.
This helps me with the understanding of justification. A guilty person is standing before a just judge. The judge hears the case and either declares the man guilty or not guilty. In the case of all mankind we stand before God, the Just God, as guilty. But because of the grace that comes through the finished work of Christ and a person placing trust in that work of Christ, and repents of His sins, God pronounces that person Not Guilty! Justification is God’s judgment pronounced. I do not know about you but that makes we want to stand up and shout and fall to my knees and worship Him!
Through the Redemption in Christ Jesus:
The text says that justification comes through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. Christ brought redemption to His people!
Redeem: The action of saving or being saved from sin, or evil. The action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing a debt.
Christ came to earth with redemption.
- He lived to fulfill all the requirements of the law of God.
- He went to the cross to bear our sins, to suffer the wrath of God that rightly laid on us.
- He took the curse that was upon us, on Himself.
- He died and rose again on the third day.
- Ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Majesty on High.
God says in Hebrews 9:22. “that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins!” The payment for forgiveness of sin is the shedding of blood. Christ shed His own blood for our souls! This is redemption! Praise God!
I pray that by the reading of God’s word and walking through this section of scripture that God has refreshed you memory of what Christ has done on the cross for His people!

Yes. This.
I do indeed know His grace is a free gift. Who else but Jesus could take an ex-Mormon-turned antitheist-God hater and turn her into a bible thumping Jesus freak? A: no One but ๐
