FREE STUDY IN THE BOOK OF TITUS. INFO AT THE END OF THIS POST!
In my post on God’s Description of a Godly Woman described in Titus 2. We touched briefly on male headship. I want to write a post today that goes deeper into this subject. I believe male headship and the subject of submission are greatly misunderstood and twisted, mainly by those who are of this world. But it is also, I am afraid, not modeled and taught in many churches. Feminism has walked right in the front door of the church and has appeared as something good. Remember what the word says about satan,
” He appears as an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14
The Scriptures also give us another warning about Satan and our responsibility to stay in and stand on the word of God.
“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
Be on the alert! I am afraid some of us (insert my name here) have not been watching and protecting ourselves from the wiles of the devil. I will admit that earlier in my walk I did not give male headship and submission to my husband much thought. God has gotten my attention through the study of His word. I am still learning and I am not always respectful to my husbands call by God to be the head of his family. I am learning and I want to submit to God’s perfect plan of headship.
I pray daily for God to teach my son Andrew what true headship is. I also pray for my precious daughter-n-law Katie and for my two daughters, Sarah, and Hannah, that God would teach them what it means to be submissive to their own husbands. I believe this is a learning process but one well worth putting in the effort. I do know that when you submit to God’s perfect plan your family functions much more smoothly and in the way He designed it.
God designed male headship for order in the home and the church. His order is perfect and safe. He does not want to harm or demean the woman. I might also add it was not designed to put the man in a domineering position. What He has designed is good. When we overstep His plan we are the ones who bring harm to our marriages and the church. We have a generation of young men and women who need living examples of God’s design for marriage and the running of the church.
If we believe, really believe that scripture is sufficient for teaching us God’s design for the family then we must look to them to see what they teach and conform our marriages to these truths. It will not always be easy but it will be worth it. Let’s look and see what they have to say!
God’s Perfect Design!
1 Corinthians 11:3 teaches, “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.”
From this verse, we see God’s order of headship.
- God is the head of Christ
- Christ is the head of man
- Man is the head of a woman
Head in this verse means; The head, chief, one to whom others are subordinate. The husband with his wife. They are one. One body can only have one head. Christ with His church which is His body, its members are His members. Of God, in relation to Christ. God the Father is designated as the head of Christ. ( Strong’s reference #2776)
Genesis 2:24 teaches, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.”
When we are joined in marriage we become one flesh. I am no longer my own and my husband is no longer his own. We are one and by God’s design, he is the head of that one flesh. How weird, strange, and ugly it would look for a body to have two heads. Two heads on a body are not NORMAL! Neither are two heads in a marriage. It is not God’s normal!
God gives the command to the husband to be the head of his wife in Ephesians 5:23
“For the husband is head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.”
Our husbands have been given a high calling by God to be the head of their family. A great responsibility. Let’s pray for our husbands and be supportive to their calling.
In these verses, God gives the command to the wife to be subject to her husband.
Colossians 3:18 teaches, ” Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting to the Lord.”
Ephesians 5:22 teaches, ” Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.”
Ephesians 5:24 teaches, ” But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.”
We, wives, are called by God to be in submission to our husbands calling as the head. Notice in these verses it says it is fitting to the Lord. Submission does not make us door mates or any less important to our calling in the family. They compliment each other. They work together each one performing his and her responsibilities before the Lord.
I want to listen to God’s word concerning marriage. What about you? Let’s look at His word together and see where we need to improve and ask God by His grace to conform us to His word!
How is God teaching you to be a submissive wife? I would love to hear from you!
I do not have all this together but by the grace of God, I am learning and striving.
Please pray for me as I pray for you.
